Omnibus proposal major setback for sustainable business

Ecopreneur.eu, the European Sustainable Business Federation, strongly opposes the Omnibus “Simplification” Package proposed by the European Commission last week, warning that it undermines sustainable business, weakens investment security, and damages the EU’s leadership in sustainable finance.

The Omnibus proposals would severely weaken the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and the EU Taxonomy.  Instead of reducing administrative burdens effectively, the package limits their scope, reduces the impact and value chain transparency, creates legal uncertainty, and discourages private investment. This is directly contradicting and undermining the goals of the Clean Industrial Deal, which Ecopreneur.eu supports.

The most counterproductive proposal is the scrapping of mandatory sector-specific reporting standards. These standards actually simplify reporting by focusing only on the most relevant data points. Meanwhile, concrete solutions—such as digitalisation, AI-driven automation, or in-person support for SMEs—are absent.

“We call on the European Parliament and Council to focus the Omnibus on simplification instead of deregulation, and urge the Commission to deliver genuine simplifications swiftly through delegated and implementing acts,” said Arthur ten Wolde, Executive Director of Ecopreneur.eu.
