Mandating sustainability criteria for all public procurement schemes
Ecopreneur.eu advocates for mandatory Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria within EU public procurement regulations to accelerate the circular economy and achieve the sustainability goals. Our position paper highlights that public procurement, representing a significant portion of the EU’s GDP and CO2 emissions, can be a powerful tool for the green transition. We therefore propose integrating mandatory sustainability criteria into all public tender contracts, starting with 25% by 2027 and reaching 100% by 2029, based on recognized international standards.
Mandating sustainability criteria in EU public procurement can release the significant power of public spending to help create a level playing field for sustainable products and services, drive green innovation, and strengthen the transition towards a low-carbon, circular, and socially inclusive economy in Europe.
